What is karate?

Karate is a system of self-defence and physical culture originally developed and refined in Okinawa and Japan. The word Karate is formed from the Japanese words Kara (empty) and Te (hand), symbolising that its practitioners - Karate-ka - are unarmed, but use their hands and feet as striking weapons.

What is Shotokan Karate?

  

There are several fundamental styles of Karate, all of which conform to the above definition, but differ slightly in their training methods. Differing levels of emphasis are placed upon issues such as speed, strength and the range of techniques.


You may hear of some styles referred to as strong and others as fast. Shotokan is a style which places equal emphasis on all these aspects and is taught within a system that instils confidence and self-control. The Shotokan style was originally developed by the Okinawan Funakoshi Gichin, who introduced it Japan.  

Who can practise Karate?

Karate is practised by men, woman and children alike of all ages. Anyone who has a reasonable level of physical fitness can train at Karate. Karate helps to improve physical fitness, self-awareness, self-confidence and self-esteem. As with any physical activity it is advisable to consult with your physician, before beginning.

What is involved with training?

Training is structured into three main areas; Kihon, Kata and Kumite, basic techniques, set combinations of techniques and sparring. Each section has a range of complexity to suit students of all levels. Kumite is introduced as basic blocking and counter attacking, but ultimately leads to free style fighting, you will be taught to expect unannounced attacks and defend yourself.  

What benefits are there to regular training?

  

The level of training required to attain high levels of skill in Karate will promote overall fitness, good health and wellbeing. The concentration, commitment and dedication required, assist in the development of a strong character, confidence and determination. 


Karate provides a disciplined training environment that can serve as a tool to mould behaviour, true Karate-ka will fight with words and only employ physical violence as a last resort or in the defence of themselves. 

What about competition?

Karate is an exciting and challenging martial art. Members of Kyoshin participate in club and regional events for all ages and grades. We are also very proud that several of our members have been selected for the KUGB Welsh National Squad.
